Some symptoms can safely wait until the next day; others need action immediately. The following warning signs should prompt you to seek veterinary help without delay.

True emergencies — do not wait

• Difficulty breathing, continuous heavy panting, or a tongue that appears blue or grey.
• Repeated unproductive retching with a swollen abdomen — this may indicate gastric torsion, a life-threatening condition that can become fatal within hours.
• Seizures or loss of consciousness.
• Bleeding that does not stop after five minutes of firm pressure.
• Inability to urinate or repeated straining without producing urine.
• Swallowing a foreign object or toxic substance, including chocolate, pesticides, human medication, grapes, raisins or onions.
• Heatstroke — severe panting after heat exposure, especially when accompanied by weakness or lethargy.

Arrange a same-day examination

• Repeated vomiting or diarrhoea lasting more than 24 hours.
• Complete refusal of food for more than one day.
• Sudden limping or refusal to walk.
• Facial swelling or severe itching, which may indicate an allergic reaction.

First aid before arrival

Keep your dog calm and warm. Do not offer food or water if your dog is vomiting, and do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to. If a foreign object is protruding from the mouth or rectum, do not pull it.
