Indoor cats are far less active than cats that go outdoors, making excess weight one of the most common health problems we see at the clinic. An overweight cat is at greater risk of diabetes, joint problems and liver disease.

How can you tell if your cat is overweight?

Place your hands along your cat’s sides. You should be able to feel the ribs without pressing, and a clear waist should be visible when you look from above. If the ribs are difficult to feel, your cat is likely carrying excess weight.

Practical steps

• Serve measured meals instead of leaving the bowl full throughout the day.
• Use the amount printed on the food package as a starting point, then adjust it to your cat’s actual weight and needs.
• Limit treats — they should provide no more than 10% of the day’s calories.
• Encourage daily play — two 15-minute sessions with a feather toy or laser can make a meaningful difference.
• Encourage drinking — a water fountain can help your cat drink more and support kidney health.

When should you visit the clinic?

If your cat gains or loses more than 10% of its weight over a short period, the issue may not be food alone and an examination is needed. Sudden weight loss can be a sign of thyroid disease, diabetes or kidney problems.
